Be Kind

The US is in the middle of a particularly rough election.  It is hard to believe how nasty some of the attacks have been.  No subject has been off limits, with vulgar language and attacks on candidate’s families being common.  This is a contest for the highest office in our country, but it looks more like a schoolyard brawl.  Hateful words and wild accusations are thrown out. Civil discourse has fallen by the wayside along with the normal candidates.  Analysts say people are looking for someone who will “tell it like it is” and push back against the “political correctness” that is ruining our country.

The other party isn’t doing much better with one candidate under Federal investigation and her opponent is promoting the most radical socialist ideas.  They both want more of the same policies that got us in the mess we are in today.

I agree we have problems that “politics as usual” can’t fix.  We need to take a different approach.  The Bible says, “be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Eph 4:32 KJV).  Yes, we should get involved in the political process and vigorously support positions that will get us on the right track, but we don’t have to be unkind.  In fact, we are told to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Mat 5:43 NIV).  We should do that ourselves and expect our politicians to do the same.

Don’t let it stop at political campaigns.  Pray “For kings and for all that are in authority” (1 Tim 2:2).  Having open and honest debates on the issues, instead of fighting among ourselves, might lead to real solutions.  Praying for our enemies and showing them Godly love through acts of kindness will help with even the most serious problems.  Even if it doesn’t, we will be in a better position to point them to JESUS.
