The “Do” seum

For the past six years we wished our youngest granddaughter a Happy Birthday from far-far-away. We lived overseas and after a brief phone call, we would wait for pictures of the celebration to show up on Facebook. This year we were able to celebrate her birthday in person!

It wasn’t a cake and ice cream party; but we spent most of the day “doing” what Olivia wanted. We went to the “Do”seum! Her older sister was excited when she heard that. When I asked why, she said, “Because we can touch everything in the museum!”

The children have always been told “don’t touch, leave it alone, sit down and be quiet” but that place is different. It isn’t a place to see what others have done, but a place to get kids involved and make things happen. They get to “do!”

My grandchildren seemed to thrive in that environment, eagerly looking forward to the next activity. They spent hours in a spy themed section, looking for clues; then went on to play with colorful lights and the effects of sound. They made windmills and parachutes to experiment with blowing wind and gravity. They were having so much fun they wouldn’t leave until hunger finally overcame their curiosity.

We need that kind of an experience with GOD. He wants us to be more than spiritual spectators, who admire what others have done for Him. We can’t be saved by doing “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Eph 2: 8 -9 KJV), but after we accept Christ, we have a lot to “do.”

He wants us to “be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only” (Jam 1: 22 KJV). We are commanded to study, to pray, to go and to love… All of those are actions! When we get to the loving part, there are endless ways to show the love of God by loving others. The objects of that love include both believers and the lost. Jesus said, “whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother” (Mark 3:35), so if we are His, we need to get to doing.
