A troubled young man tried to assassinate Donald Trump last weekend and was killed in the failed attempt. It’s said he was bullied in school and rejected by the gun club because of his poor shooting skills. His motives aren’t clear yet, but he may have thought this was his chance to be somebody in the eyes of those who hate Trump. Surely, he realized his choice might get him killed. Though the investigation is ongoing, it’s obvious that this would-be assassin had many chances to change his mind before he put himself and others in danger.
With so many unknowns, what is the point of this story? If the young man had ended the life of Donald Trump, we would have lost a candidate who millions of people voted for. It would have made news around the world, been celebrated by some, and mourned by others, but that wouldn’t have been the big story. Trump’s death would have ended his chances to accept JESUS CHRIST as his Savior. If he was saved, then for him “to die is gain” (1:21 KJV). That’s what happened to the innocent victim who was killed during the attempted assassination. His chances ended with his last clear thought, so the choices he made before that determined where he will spend eternity. That’s also true for the gunman.
“God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:16-17). Now it’s your choice to make, but you never know when your last chance will be.
