Darkness and Light

There is a hallway in our apartment that leads from the living room to the bedrooms. At the far end of the hallway one door leads to a spare bedroom where Susan hangs my clothes. The curtains in that room are always closed, so we can’t see anything, until we turn on the light. Another door leads to a bathroom, but little light gets through the louvered window.

A third door leads to another room where Susan does her ironing. The curtains in that room are always open, so Susan can see what she is doing. I like to close the door to that room when she is not ironing, but that makes the hallway a very dark place. Then half the apartment is dark and dreary. I can’t see in the dark and might trip and fall if I’m not careful. However, when I open that one door, the light shines into the hallway, I can see clearly, and it brightens the whole place.

Life is like that hallway. We need the light of JESUS to let us see clearly. “Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12 ESV). We need to open the door of our heart and let the light shine through. That light lifts our spirit, helps us to see clearly, and keeps us from falling. “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined” (Isaiah 9:2 KJV). That light overcomes the darkness and brings us out of the land of the shadow of death and into His glorious light.
