Something for Nothing

That is what Presidential candidates promised! If you elect them to the highest office in the land, you will get free healthcare, college loans paid off and cash money, even if you don’t want to work for it. It’s early in the election cycle, so I am sure they will come up with more stuff they want to give you for “free.” Even if they are elected, with our ballooning national debt, how can they give us all those benefits be free? It all sounds too good to be true!

The truth is, they are not free. The bill for “free” healthcare alone would be in the trillions of dollars and that doesn’t count wiping out the healthcare insurance industry. Government imposed cost controls would destroy a healthcare system that is the envy of the world. Healthcare related wages would drop as cost reductions are implemented and we would lose more doctors and nurses. We already have a shortage of nurses, because the job is so demanding. Even with the cuts, there will never be enough “free” care, so it will be rationed. You will have to wait to be seen, or you may even be denied care. All of that disruption is because 3% of our population has no healthcare and others want to get “something for nothing.”

Even with cost controls, service reductions and rationed care, someone will have to pay for all that “free” healthcare. The most popular answer is to tax the rich, though we know that won’t be enough. The next answer is to raise corporate taxes, which will wreck our economy and still not pay the staggering bill. That means you will wind up paying for your “free” healthcare. With a declining economy, due to the increasing tax burden, and an aging population, your taxes will continue to increase to pay for those who can’t or won’t pay. Are you sure you want “free” healthcare? The truth is you can’t get “something for nothing.” Somebody has to pay the bill.

There is something else that is called free, the gift of salvation. The Bible confirms that “by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Eph 2:8-9 KJV). Grace means you didn’t deserve salvation; even though you must accept it by faith. Your faith isn’t payment for salvation, it is an acknowledgement of who JESUS is “for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Heb 11:6 KJV). Accepting JESUS as your LORD and Savior through the prompting of the HOLY SPIRIT is a free gift to you, but it isn’t “something for nothing.” Someone had to pay.

“God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 KJV). That was a very expensive gift that GOD gave to “whosoever believeth” and it came a great price. Would you give your son up to be killed for what others did wrong, especially if most of them wouldn’t accept that gift? Would you die a miserable death because someone else purposely did wrong? JESUS did when He died for you and me. That was “something” and He offers it to us “for nothing!”
