Our part of Texas is rather dry, so there is little need for huge drainage systems. When we get too much rain, the excess water is allowed to flow over the roads. After most thunderstorms these low water crossings are safe, but they can quickly become dangerous if it rains too hard. The rushing water can kill your car engine or even wash you and your car away.
Right after we moved here, I vividly remember watching an elderly man on the news, sitting on the side of his flooded car and refusing to be rescued because they couldn’t get his wife. He could have easily been saved, but wouldn’t leave his wife. Judging by the way the water covered most of his car, she must have already drowned inside the car. Right there on television, with the rescuers within arm’s reach, he sank into the murky waters when his car was pushed over by the rushing waters. His head was briefly visible before the water finally pulled him under.
That kind of tragedy has been repeated again and again, because people misjudged the danger and thought they could make it through the flooded crossings. The theme of a public service campaign “Turn Around Don’t Drown” seems like a no-brainer. The Police block the roads with barriers and post warnings in an attempt to keep drivers safe, but they ignore the warning and go around the barriers. The City began charging hefty fines for rescues, but people still go around the barriers, and many will have to be rescued, while others will die in their vain attempt.
That seems all too much like people who won’t turn from their sin and seek the LORD. The consequences of sin are plain to see. Misery, pain and death await those who refuse to “turn around” (repent) and go another way. They don’t have to continue on the path to destruction, but they mistakenly think they can make it without JESUS.
The Bible says “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” ( 2 Chron 7:14 KJV). Sadly, if they don’t obey, they face certain destruction.
So why won’t they turn around and seek GOD when the warning signs are so clear? They may have been deceived by “the thief” that “cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy” (John 10:10 KJV). They think they can make it without GOD, but they are wrong.
They also don’t want to humble themselves and ask for GOD’s forgiveness. They are afraid of what other will think. They will eventually humble themselves and ask GOD to forgive them when they stand before CHRIST to be judged, but that will be too late. Don’t wait, “now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor 6:2 KJV).
Please turn around now and into the loving arms of JESUS! Let GOD’s love draw you away from danger and unto salvation. “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 KJV). GOD is calling you to turn around from destruction and unto eternal life, which is found only in salvation through JESUS CHRIST!
